16th July 2009

by admin on Jul.16, 2009, under Blog

Well, here we are again.  I’m taking a small break from writing ‘The High Watchtower’ and noticed I hadn’t done a Blog entry for a while, so I thought it might make a nice change of pace.  In addition to the forthcoming story, there are a couple of other things on the boil at the Community that I thought you might be interested in hearing about.  Firstly, the UTC website will soon feature its very own Mnemosyne Device.  Thats right folks, soon you will be able to discover your first incarnation and also how that particular incarnation came to an end.  As with the stories, Newsletter subscibers will have a 24 hour preview period to make use of before the Device is displayed for general use.  There’s another couple of book reviews, ‘Where Late the Sweet Birds Sang’ by Kate Wilhelm and ‘Concrete Island’ by J.G. Ballard, the first one has cloning as one of its themes (and incest, but more of that later..), while the second, well, if ‘Robinson Crusoe’ was a grim urban nightmare, this would be it.  I hope that made sense.  There will also be another background article to preceed ‘The High Watchtower’.  It will be in a similar vein to the one before it, and will contain further hints of things to come.  Anyway, stuff to do and so on, so after gently reminding you about the newsletter again I will bid you farewell!  Hope to see you soon!

The Unified Terran Community [UTC] Part 10

by admin on Jul.05, 2009, under Background

Excerpt from a discussion on the Avalon Community Forum:

Harrier posted 20.03.2237
Having recently joined a Chroniclers group, I was looking for detail on one of the military battles that took place during the founding years. I discovered that the outcome of the conflict had revolved around the use of powerful psychics on the side of Heru Seleem. On an impulse I checked a few more and discovered much the same thing. There was considerable variance in the number of forces involved, but every battle I could find information on had, essentially, been fought between a small group of psychics and a much larger force of conventional troops. The result was always victory for the psychics. It was the specific accounts by Community members, who had been those soldiers in past incarnations, that caught my attention. In one account, heavily verified, a psychic flayed a thousand armoured troops with an ‘ululating cry’. There were many, many more accounts of such spectacular feats. And then it struck me, since that time, there have been no psychics with such raw power. Not even close. Anybody got any ideas?

Dinarzade posted 20.03.2237
Harrier, I’m a practising Psychonaut and have been for my last three incarnations. I work with psychics frequently and am one myself, and I assure you, there is a vast spectrum of ability and strength. However, particularly traumatic events can cause the memory to warp. I suspect these events have become slightly exaggerated through misremembering. Also, Seleem probably recruited the strongest psychics he could.

An0nymous posted 21.03.2237
Harrier, keep searching! consider, why does the Seleem Configuration Count go to a figure that no human has ever had?

Dinarzade posted 21.03.2237
An0nymous, the score that you’re alluding to, represents a hypothetical situation whereby all of the genetic markers are found in one person. From your other posts I’d say you were a little paranoid. Your choice of username is in itself a bit worrying. I can help you, message if you’re interested, Dinarzade@unifiedterrancommunity.co.uk

An0nymous posted 24.03.2237
Harrier, I now have docs which prove that Heru Seleem was working with a group who all had a Configuration Count of 100. It was from this baseline that all humans are measured. I have your details, will forward docs.

Harrier posted 24.03.2237
What do you mean you’ve got my details? How? and what do you mean ‘all humans are measured’?

Harrier posted 25.03.2237
An0nymous? Still waiting for those docs!

Dinarzade posted 29.03.2237
Harrier, I have another theory for you, about your powerful psychics. I just became aware of a group called the Mechanics. The one I met was able to take down an Outsider which had managed to break through from the spirit world. Its more than possible that you have been discovering the early origins of that group. Did An0nymous sent your docs?

Harrier posted 29.03.2237
Nope, never got them. Probably never existed! :(

Dinarzade posted 30.03.2237
Had a strange dream last night, I’ve meditated on it and I’m pretty sure there’s going to be a significant amount of volcanic activity from Mount Etna. You heard it here first! ;)

5th July 2009

Some further musings on the subject of reincarnation. As has been mentioned elsewhere, the process of reincarnation is one of the most important underlying concepts of the Unified Terran Community setting. When I was researching the subject, to help me decide how I wanted it to work in the alternate reality of the stories. I was surprised at the prevalence of the idea in real world religions, both contemporary and ancient. It’s important to point out that my research was not exhaustive, I wasn’t particularly keen to imitate a specific religions interpretation of reincarnation, I was more interested to see a few different examples. From what I was able to gather there are, broadly speaking, two versions of the concept. In one paradigm, it is the rebirth of a human soul into another human body. In the second paradigm, the process of reincarnation is not restricted to incarnation into human form, souls can be reborn in animal bodies. Within these two very broad categories, there are numerous subtle variations which combine to ensure that there is no consensus view on exactly how the process works. The lack of consensus wasn’t surprising but was quite handy from the point of view of seeing different takes on the subject. I also didn’t want to endorse any one religions interpretation of the subject. You can’t please everyone, with such disparate views on the concept, so I opted not to please anyone. Generally speaking, though, I followed the idea of reincarnation being restricted to human to human transfer.

The Mystery Religions of Ancient Greece were the inspiration for the terminology that the members of the Community use to describe their incarnation technology. Areas such as India and the Orient are of course famous for the incorporation of reincarnation into their beliefs, but it was, and is, present in some form in every culture. The ancient religion of the Egyptians, which seems to be the ancestor of many other belief systems, had a strong emphasis on reincarnation. J.J. Dewey postulates that the belief was part of early Christian teachings, but was removed as church leaders felt it was incompatible with their doctrines. The Church of Scientology also features reincarnation as a central belief, although their take on it has human kind as being extra terrestrial in origin (or at least that’s my understanding of it…)

A process related to the concept of reincarnation is past life regression, by means of hypnosis. One of the most recurring features associated with this, is the considerable historical inaccuracy associated with the memories. This has led many to the conclusion that the memories recovered through the hypnotic technique are not true memories, but creations of the subconscious after receiving a suggestion to recall memories from before the subjects birth. This got me thinking as well, what if it were possible to prove such memories were real? This would be a fundamental change to our reality and how we perceive each other. Then I began to consider the possibilities of the complete restoration of the memories from any past incarnation. The vast increase of collective wisdom, would have a staggering impact on our society, techniques and theories from the ancient world which we have never been able to duplicate or fully grasp would become accessible once more. Marry this with our modern day technological advances and vast cultural leaps could be made.

Which leads me conveniently to a small advance notice, the third part of the main UTC story arc, with a working title of ‘The High Watchtower’ is underway and will be posted in due course. I’m also working on another Travellers Tales instalment, which should be finished around the same time or possibly a bit earlier. For those who simply can’t wait, there will be a background article very soon which will have a few clues as to the next story. I’ll bid you farewell, for now, and hope to see you again soon!
