Unified Terran Community

One of the more unusual groups in the UTC are the Psychonauts.  The Psychonauts perform several roles in the Community, all through their use of the drug Entheogen.  Their principle activity is the exploration of the mind.  With the combination of the drug and various cognitive techniques they discover how the mind works, using this information to help people to improve their psychological state and their cognitive functions.  Some of the Psychonauts are involved in the study of the Pineal gland, specifically it’s relationship to dreaming and psychic ability.  Through their extensive use of the drug Entheogen, almost every Psychonaut has developed psychic abilities of one sort or another.  The Psychonauts perform two other important functions within society.  Due to their enhanced awareness of the spirit realm and a high incidence of ecstatic experiences, they fill the role of spiritual advisor to many of the Community, and, with their extensive knowledge of the mind they are responsible for helping people to master any psychic abilities they have manifested and use them safely.  In essence, the Psychonauts offer a holistic spiritual and mental health service.

Raoul and Cailte silently regarded each other. Though both men were tall, Raoul was lean and wiry, while Cailte was more heavily built with a silvery scar running down the left hand side of his jaw. Raoul was the first to break the silence.
‘I’m glad you’ve come back to us, Cailte, you were well missed.’
Cailte grunted in acknowledgement and and continued to stare into the middle distance.
‘Obviously, the circumstances are regrettable but you’ve made the right choice, the Community needs you.’
Cailte glanced at Raoul, his eyes devoid of any emotion.
‘What else would I do? Where else would I go? This is not a society for the likes of me.’
‘That’s a little negative,’ murmured Raoul ‘the role you play in the Community is a vital one, these people are soft and, without you and I, would be once more living under the boot of the aberrant personalities.’
Cailte shrugged, ‘In time, even what we do will become unnecessary.’
‘I certainly hope so,’ replied Raoul ‘now, it’s been a while since you were in active service, so there are a couple of small tests..’
Raoul paused. ‘Are you ready?’
Cailte shrugged again and Raoul frowned slightly. Raoul flicked his index finger and a heavy wrench spun off his table, turning end over end before striking Cailte in the forehead. The two men stared at each other.
‘You’re not ready.’ said Raoul simply. He rose from his chair, turned his back on Cailte, and considered the view out the window. As Raoul looked out the window, suddenly Cailte’s eyes began to burn. In one fluid motion he stooped, grabbed the wrench and hurled it at the back of Raoul’s head. The spinning tool froze in the air, about an inch from Raoul, who slowly turned with a triumphant smile.
‘That’s the spirit soldier! Now, lets get you back in the program.’ Raoul went into a drawer on his desk and produced a brightly coloured handful of capsules. He thrust his hand out, the capsules in the palm of his hand. ‘You better start with these..’

Penny Dreadful” is the first story set in the Unified Terran Community.  The story follows an ancient warrior soul, as he  struggles to find a place in society beyond that of his current role; the man responsible for tracking down a centuries old evil which has stolen a human body and returned to stalk mankind once more…

Reincarnation is a central feature of this setting.  In this case, the term refers specifically to reincarnation into human form.  Reincarnation is facilitated and regulated by the technologies collectively referred to as the Mnemosyne Device and the group who operate it, the Life Engineers.  The technology performs a number of functions; the process of Imprinting, where a woman of child bearing age is psychically tagged so that a specific soul is drawn to her at the point of conception to be reborn.  The Device also makes possible the reincarnation of the soul into a clone, and, in either case permits retention of memories from previous incarnations.  New souls still come into existence and are shepherded towards appropriate parents by the Life Engineers.  Another important function of the technology, is that it permits Life Engineer telepaths to interact more reliably with the spirit realms and smooth the reincarnation process.  Not everyone wishes to be reborn immediately, the facility is there for those who wish to continue the projects they were involved in as a matter of urgency.  When a soul wishes to be reborn, they contact the Life Engineer telepaths through the Mnemosyne Device and their preferred method of incarnation is promptly prepared.  The Device is based on two discoveries; the first, that souls in spiritform have full recollection of all past incarnations and the second, that an effect  named the Lethean Barrier strips the souls of their past memories as they are being reborn.  The Mnemosyne Device allows the soul to cross the Lethean Barrier with it’s memories intact.  One other effect of these activities is that the Life Engineers have become aware of other spirits, ones that have never been human…

The UTC is, on the surface, a technological utopia. This society rose from the ashes of the collapsed societies of the early twenty first century. In contrast to the civilisations of that dark time, the UTC is a free society. There is no poverty, no homelessness; all energy is generated from green sources. There is total religious freedom, no social stratification. Disease has been all but eradicated and death has been made an inconvenience through the marvel that is the Mnemosyne Device. Through this technology it is possible to be reincarnated as swiftly as desired, in one of two ways; natural rebirth or incarnation into a specially grown clone, in both cases retaining full memory of past incarnations. Construction and all labour is performed by robots with a limited adaptive AI. With these conditions society has evolved into groups of people coming together to develop ideas which will work to the benefit of mankind as a whole. Food is provided by BioEngineers, and GeoEngineers have worked feverishly to restore the planet’s ecosystem. Settlements are constructed using advanced techniques and materials and exist in harmony with the environment. [more to follow]

Essentially, this Site will serve as a combination of things. It will allow those who are interested to follow the course of the Unified Terran Community short story project and will function as a working notebook for me.  The site will comprise of early drafts of stories and the background notes for the setting itself.  Samples will be posted in due course, as they are written. In the future there will hopefully be illustrations produced to compliment the stories. The Unified Terran Community tells the stories of a future Utopia gone wrong. This is not a Dystopian universe however, the bulk of Humanity believes they are living in a genuine Utopia, on the surface things could not be better. Unfortunately this world has a dark side, hidden from the public. These stories will explore the hidden side of the Community and will determine the society’s final fate. Will they be able to preserve their existence or will human nature prove their undoing?
